Paediatric First Aid

If you work with children and young people then a paediatric first aid course might be for you!

Accidents and injuries can be common in children - it is a normal part of childhood, as they learn to explore the world and capture independence. Infants and children have anatomical differences to adults (such as a large head relative to the size of their body), meaning that some injuries are more common than others. Children’s immune systems (vital for protection against diseases) are also developing, meaning that sometimes they are more susceptible to becoming unwell and to infections.

When caring or working with younger people, accident prevention is key. Many practical steps can be taken in the care setting and at home to minimise risks. These include placing medications out of reach, supporting development of road safety skills, cutting foods lengthways and in to quarters, supervision at meal times and tying up/securing blind or curtain cords.

However, accidents happen! It is a normal part of childhood. Undertaking a Paediatric First Aid course will help you to know what to do if an emergency situation arises and can equip you with a range of life preserving skills.

It is a requirement for childcare workers such as, Teachers, School Staff, Childminders, Pre-school workers, and Early Years Practitioners to hold a valid Paediatric First Aid Qualification. Parents/guardians, baby sitters and those with an interest in learning more about paediatric first aid are also welcome to attend and learn some essential life saving skills. My Paediatric First Aid Courses meet the requirements as set out by Ofsted and EYFS, and cover a wide range of illnesses and injuries that could occur when caring for infants and children. Topics include;

Recognising and treating choking across the age groups

Unconscious children / babies who are breathing

Giving CPR to a child and a baby

Spotting the signs and symptoms of an unwell child / infant and undertaking an illness assessment

Treating burns, scalds, bites, stings, bumps and bruises

Fractures and dislocations

Head Injuries and concussion

Asthma, Diabetes and Anaphylaxis (severe life threating allergies)

And much more!
