What is Emergency First Aid at Work?

With so many First Aid courses to choose from, selecting the right training can be a challenge. All sectors should complete a first aid needs assessment to enable decisions around what level of first aid training is required, and how many people should be trained, what risks are present and the likelihood of harm occurring as a result, and the size of the workforce, and if you need to provide first aid for other members of the public. EFAW is usually suitable for smaller, lower risk environments

If you are trained to the Emergency First Aid Level - then you are qualified to provide emergency care to someone who is injured or becomes unwell at work. The Emergency First Aid Work course meets HSE requirements and includes a range of topics, including;

  • Role & responsibilities of a first aider

  • Conducting a scene survey / surveying an emergency situation safely

  • Providing first aid to unresponsive casualties

  • Managing choking

  • Adult CPR (adaptations for children over 1 year are discussed) and how to use a defibrillator

  • First aid for bleeding and managing shock

  • Seizures

  • First aid for minor injuries, such as bruises, cuts, bites & stings, splinters and nosebleeds

  • First aid for burns

How long is the Course?

The EFAW course is 6 hours in duration. However, the course can also be delivered via a blended approach where 3 hours are completed online and 3 hours completed on the classroom

How will I be assessed?

I support candidates throughout the course to demonstrate and practise their skills to a high level. A range of skill assessments take place throughout the day, alongside interactive workshops and question and answer sessions. There is also a multiple choice theory test at the end of the day.

3 Years. However, the HSE recommends undertaking annual refresher training to maintain confidence and competence.
